Our Approach to Physical Therapy

IMG 8734 e1464546224244 680x381 - Our Approach to Physical Therapy

“Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s
physical, emotional, and mental states.”
– Carol Welch

Our bodies were made to move.

Our organs work better, our circulatory system works better, our brains work better, everything works better when we move. We are happier and healthier when we move.

When we get injured our body’s ability to move changes.

When our body receives an injury our body’s instinct is to protect the area. The body responds with pain, swelling, and muscle guarding. These reactions cause us to change our movement patterns. Often it is the response of the body to the injury that is most limiting and prolongs healing time.

Tissue tightness can increase pain and slow recovery.

Excessive muscle and tissue guarding can restrict blood flow, pinch nerves, and reduce range of motion.  All of this can result in increased pain and decreased function.

Here at Ascension PT we use manual therapy hands-on techniques to release dysfunctional guarding patterns, decrease swelling, and to improve overall movement. This allows greater ease of movement and often decreased pain.

Recovering from an injury is not always as easy as just gaining strength.

Sometimes there is a specific area of weakness that has fed into the dysfunction. However, more often than not it is not an issue of weakness but lack of connection.

When an injury occurs neural communication to our specific body parts can be disrupted causing decreased coordination and inefficient movement patterns.

Here at Ascension PT we work on movement re-education to retrain the body to move in the patterns that are the most efficient and reduce the dysfunctional patterns common with injury. This helps reduce pain and allows you to return to the activities you love.

You know your body better than anyone

The most important piece of our rehabilitation is helping you feel confident and independent with the future care of your body.  We work hard and play hard in Alaska. It is essential you understand how to manage your symptoms and how to avoid reinjury.

We would love to help you.

Here at Ascension PT we use manual therapy, exercise, and patient education to help you resolve your pain, increase your activity, and improve your life.
